“Elisha asked, “Tell me, what do you have in the house?” “Nothing at all, except a flask of olive oil,” she replied. And Elisha said, “Borrow as many empty jars as you can from your friends and neighbors. Then go into your house with your sons and shut the door behind you. Pour olive oil from your flask into the jars, setting each one aside when it is filled.” So she did as she was told. Her sons kept bringing jars to her, and she filled one after another. Soon every container was full to the brim!” 2 Kings 4:2-6 NLT
Lord, we thank you that you do not require more of us than what we can provide. Sometimes you use what we already have. I love this story of the widow. She went to Elisha desperate, at the end of her rope. She didn’t see any way out, but you did. You took the one thing that she had left and used it to change her circumstances.
Help us learn to see our circumstances through your eyes. Remind us that even when we can’t see a way out that you can, and that you are not limited by the things that are impossible for us. Help us not to limit you by what we deem possible. Help us be willing to allow you to use whatever we may possess.
When Elisha told her to go and get as many jars as possible, she listened. When he said that she would fill all the jars that she gathered with the little oil she had, she didn’t laugh. She obeyed. She trusted for the impossible. Teach us to have that kind of faith and believe when you tell us you will do the impossible with the small and ordinary thing we have in our hands. Grow our faith and trust in you. Thank you for using what we have for your work. Thank you for always making a way for us.
In Jesus name, amen.
