June 2, 2022 - 2 Peter 2:19-22
“They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves of sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you. And when people escape from the wickedness of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and then get tangled up and enslaved by sin again, they are worse off than before. It would be better if they had never known the way to righteousness than to know it and then reject the command they were given to live a holy life. They prove the truth of this proverb: “A dog returns to its vomit.” And another says, “A washed pig returns to the mud.”” 2 Peter 2:19-22 NLT
Lord, we praise you that you have set us free from bondage of sin and corruption. We are forever grateful for that freedom! We never want to take it for granted. We never want to willingly lay down our freedom and put back on the bondages of sin. Having experienced your freedom, sin’s bondages would be so much more suffocating. Lord, you paid such a high price for that freedom, we never want to throw that gift back in your face as if it means nothing, just to return to a life of bondage. The images these verses paint is not pleasant to think about, but they paint an accurate picture. When we start to turn back to our sin, open our eyes to see a clear picture that disgusts us as much as seeing a dog eat its vomit. Let returning to our sin be even more repulsive. We want to commit to living righteous lives. We want to follow after the command you have given us to live a holy life. Please increase in us a desire to walk in holiness that goes beyond the seductive call of sin and selfishness in our lives. Open our eyes to the traps the enemy sets to draw us in and increase our hatred for anything that pulls us away from you, our Lord and King. We want to live lives wholly devoted to you, for you are worthy of all our hearts.
In Jesus name, amen.
