January 27, 2023 - Proverbs 27:2, 21
“Let someone else honor you for your accomplishments, for self-praise is never appropriate. Fire is the way to test the purity of silver and gold, but the character of a man is tested by giving him a measure of fame.” Proverbs 27:2, 21 TPT
Lord, it’s sad how easy it is to be prideful. Humility is something that is so easy to say we want, but hard to walk in. Our society is all about pushing your way to the top, fighting for your right to be seen, or what you think you deserve. Jesus, we don’t want to follow society norms. We want to follow your example. You didn’t come to the world as the King you are and demand everyone to follow you. No, you came and lived as humbly as possible. You didn’t exalt yourself. We read in Luke 14:8-11 where you are talking more on this topic. It says, “When you are invited to a wedding feast, don’t sit in the seat of honor. What if someone who is more distinguished than you has also been invited? The host will come and say, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then you will be embarrassed, and you will have to take whatever seat is left at the foot of the table! “Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you, he will come and say, ‘Friend, we have a better place for you!’ Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
Jesus, help us always choose the less exalted position and be patient for you to exalt us in your way and time. Help us have a servant mentality and live to serve others like you did. Being humble doesn’t mean being insecure. Teach us how to walk confidently in who you say we are, but not allow our confidence to cross over to arrogance. Open our eyes to areas in our life that we need to work on our humility. Jesus, help us live our lives like you.
In Jesus name, amen.
