December 25, 2023 - Matthew 2:1-2, 9b-11
“Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.” And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were filled with joy! They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:1-2, 9b-11 NLT
Jesus, even as a helpless newborn, you drew wise men unto you. They searched for you and journeyed far to bring you honor, worship, and gifts. You are worthy for the world to search you out. You are worthy of all the honor and glory. You are worthy of so much more than any gift we could ever give you. Jesus, you are God Almighty. The King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. The Alpha and Omega. Our earthly minds can’t even begin to comprehend how great you are.
Lord, forgive us for becoming desensitized to who you really are. It is easy for us to make you just a “normal” part of our lives and not show you the honor you deserve. We see names like “God Almighty” or “Lord of Lords” and they become something that we just say without really thinking about exactly what they mean. Today, as we are surrounded by all things Christmas, don’t let us get so wrapped up in our activities that we forget to truly celebrate with you.
Today, on your beautiful birthday, that changed the course of the world forever, let us be like the wise men and take the time to search for you. Let us bring you a gift that brings you honor and glory. Show us what we can give you today that will bring joy to your heart.
In Jesus name, amen.
