August 4, 2023 - Luke 9:57-59a
“On their way, someone came up to Jesus and said, “I want to follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Yes, but remember this: even animals in the field have holes in the ground to sleep in, and birds have their nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay down his head.” Jesus then turned to another and said, “Come be my disciple.” Luke 9:57-59a TPT
Jesus, we want to answer the call and be your disciples. We want to follow you in all that we do. We want to be willing to lay aside anything that is required to follow you and make your name known. You spent the 3 years of your ministry without even having a home. You just went from place to place with basically nothing, trusting the Father to provide for your needs. What an example. Thank you that you typically don’t ask us to get rid of everything but the clothes on our back. But, Lord, if you asked us to, we want to be willing.
Jesus, teach us how to trust in the Father the way you trust in Him. Grow us. Even if what you ask of us is highly frowned upon by family, friends, or society, let us be willing to obey. Whether it is physical belongings, our favorite foods, things that make us comfortable, behaviors, attitudes, or actions help us be willing to surrender anything you ask. Help us hold our whole lives with open hands before you. It is yours, Lord, take what you please. Again, so easy to say, yet so hard to walk out. Help us.
Teach us how to be generous with everything you give us. Help us to never get stingy or fearful that if we lay something down, that you will leave us high and dry without what we really need. You are so faithful and trustworthy. Thank you for that, Lord. We commit to following you and being your disciple, regardless of the cost. You are worthy of it all.
In Jesus name, amen.
